MECH-OILER
Craftsman · S180 42cc Chainsaw
The automatic chain oiler is not delivering bar and chain oil, causing the chain to overheat, smoke, wear prematurely, and cut poorly. Craftsman chainsaws have an automatic oiler that pumps bar oil from the reservoir through a port to the bar groove whenever the chain is running. Check: (1) Oil reservoir empty — the most common cause. Fill with bar and chain oil (NOT motor oil — bar oil is formulated to be tacky and resist being thrown off the chain). Check the reservoir before each use. (2) Oil port clogged — the small oil delivery port on the bar or the outlet hole on the saw body gets clogged with sawdust and debris. Clean the port with a small wire or compressed air. (3) Oil pump failure — the oil pump is driven mechanically by the engine via a worm gear. If the worm gear or pump mechanism is damaged, no oil flows. A replacement oil pump costs $10-$25. (4) Oil line kinked or clogged — the line from the reservoir to the pump may be clogged or disconnected. Inspect and replace if needed. (5) Verify oiler is working — hold the nose of the running saw (at full throttle) about 6 inches from a clean surface like cardboard. You should see a spray pattern of oil. If no oil throws, the oiler system needs service.
