MECH-CHAIN-WONT-SPIN
Craftsman · S180 42cc Chainsaw
The engine runs but the chain does not move when the throttle is applied. On Craftsman chainsaws, the chain should NOT spin at idle — it should only rotate when the throttle trigger is squeezed. If it does not rotate at full throttle, causes include: (1) Chain brake engaged — the chain brake is a safety device activated by pushing the front hand guard forward. It locks the clutch drum and stops chain movement. Pull the hand guard back toward the front handle to disengage the brake. This is the most common cause — the operator activates the brake inadvertently. (2) Clutch failure — the centrifugal clutch engages at high RPM and should drive the chain sprocket. If the clutch shoes are worn, glazed, or the springs are broken, the clutch slips and does not transfer power. Replace the clutch assembly. (3) Drive sprocket worn — the teeth on the clutch sprocket wear down and no longer engage the chain drive links. Replace the sprocket. (4) Chain tension too tight — an overtightened chain binds on the bar and cannot move. Loosen the bar nuts, adjust the chain tensioning screw until the chain can be pulled around the bar by hand with slight resistance, then retighten the bar nuts. (5) Bar groove packed with debris — sawdust packs into the bar groove, preventing chain movement. Clean the groove with a bar groove cleaning tool.
