MECH-DIES-UNDER-LOAD
Craftsman · S180 42cc Chainsaw
The chainsaw engine starts and idles but stalls or loses significant power when making a cut. This indicates the engine cannot sustain power output under load. Causes: (1) Dirty air filter — the most common cause in chainsaws. The air filter clogs quickly with sawdust while in use. Check and clean the filter frequently (every tank of fuel in dusty conditions). (2) Carburetor needs adjustment — 2-cycle chainsaw carburetors have High (H), Low (L), and Idle (T/LA) adjustment screws. If the High-speed screw is set too lean, the engine starves of fuel under load. Adjust the H screw richer (counterclockwise) in small increments (1/8 turn) while the saw is under load. (3) Clogged spark arrestor — the exhaust has a small metal screen (spark arrestor) that clogs with carbon deposits, restricting exhaust flow and reducing power. Remove and clean with a wire brush, or replace. (4) Clogged fuel filter — the fuel filter in the tank is blocked. Replace it. (5) Exhaust port carbon buildup — especially on older saws, carbon deposits in the exhaust port restrict flow. (6) Compression loss — worn piston, rings, or cylinder. A compression test should read 100+ PSI on a healthy engine. Below 90 PSI indicates wear.
