MECH-FUEL-LEAK
Craftsman · S180 42cc Chainsaw
Fuel (gasoline/oil mix) is leaking from the chainsaw. This is a serious fire hazard since chainsaws operate near wood and sawdust. Stop the saw immediately and do not restart until the leak is repaired. Common leak locations: (1) Fuel lines — 2-cycle fuel is aggressive to rubber, and chainsaw fuel lines deteriorate faster than on 4-cycle engines. Inspect the fuel line from the tank to the carburetor for cracks, splits, or hardening. Replace with fuel-rated line of the correct diameter. (2) Fuel cap/vent — the fuel cap gasket deteriorates or the cap vent allows fuel to seep out during operation (vibration and angle changes cause fuel to slosh). Replace the cap. (3) Primer bulb — if equipped, the rubber primer bulb can crack and leak fuel. Replace. (4) Carburetor gaskets — the gaskets between the carburetor, intake manifold, and engine can fail, allowing fuel to seep out. Replace the gasket set. (5) Fuel tank — cracks in the plastic fuel tank from dropping or UV exposure. On some models the tank is integrated into the chassis and replacement requires significant disassembly. Fuel-resistant epoxy may work for small cracks.
