MECH-CHAIN-BRAKE
Craftsman · S180 42cc Chainsaw
The chain brake does not engage when the front hand guard is pushed forward, or the brake stays engaged and cannot be released. The chain brake is a CRITICAL SAFETY device that stops the chain within milliseconds if kickback occurs. Operating a chainsaw with a non-functioning chain brake is extremely dangerous. Problems: (1) Brake band worn — the steel band that wraps around the clutch drum wears thin from repeated activation. If the band is worn, it may not grip the drum firmly. Replace the brake band. (2) Brake spring broken — the spring that provides the force to engage the brake has snapped. The brake handle moves freely but does not lock the chain. Replace the spring. (3) Brake stuck engaged — the brake was activated but will not release when the hand guard is pulled back. This can be caused by a bent or corroded brake mechanism, or the brake band has overheated and contracted. Try pulling the hand guard firmly backward. If it will not release, the mechanism needs disassembly and cleaning/replacement. (4) Dirty mechanism — sawdust, pitch, and debris accumulate in the brake mechanism, causing sticky operation. Clean periodically with a brush. (5) Do NOT bypass or disable the chain brake. If it cannot be repaired, do not use the chainsaw until the brake is functional.
