Pentair · Pentair MasterTemp 400,000 BTU Gas Pool/Spa Heater
The water pressure switch did not close, indicating insufficient water flow through the heater. The MasterTemp requires a minimum of approximately 15 GPM (gallons per minute) of water flow to operate safely. Without adequate flow, the heat exchanger can overheat and crack (an extremely expensive repair). Common causes include a dirty pool filter (most common — filter back pressure reduces flow through the heater), the pump not running, closed valves in the heater plumbing loop, a faulty pressure switch (the switch itself can fail), or undersized plumbing to the heater. Clean the pool filter first. Verify the pump is running with adequate flow. Check the pressure switch by manually testing with a multimeter while water is flowing.
