INSUFFICIENT HOT
Rheem · Rheem Performance 40 Gal. 4500-Watt 6-Year Tank Electric Water Heater
Hot water runs out much faster than expected for a 40-gallon tank. The electric water heater uses two heating elements that operate in a flip-flop arrangement: the upper element heats first (providing quick recovery of the top portion), then power switches to the lower element to heat the rest. If the lower element has burned out, only the upper portion of the tank is heated — about 10-15 gallons of hot water instead of 40. Test the lower element for continuity. Also check the lower thermostat for proper operation. Another cause: a broken dip tube (the plastic tube that directs cold inlet water to the bottom of the tank). If the dip tube breaks, cold water enters at the top and mixes with the hot water outlet, diluting it immediately. Look for small white plastic particles in the aerator screens of hot water faucets.
