INSUFFICIENT HOT
Rheem · Rheem Professional Classic 50 Gal. 38,000 BTU Natural Gas Water Heater
The water heater provides some hot water but it runs out much faster than expected for a 50-gallon tank. Causes: the thermostat on the gas control is set too low (turn it up toward the HOT mark or to 120°F), heavy sediment accumulation at the bottom of the tank has reduced the effective tank volume (flush the tank by connecting a garden hose to the drain valve and draining until the water runs clear), or the dip tube has broken. The dip tube is a plastic tube that directs incoming cold water to the bottom of the tank — if it breaks, cold water enters at the top and mixes directly with the hot water outlet, diluting it. Dip tube failure is identifiable by small white plastic particles in the hot water fixtures.
