The thermistor (temperature sensor) that measures the hot water outlet temperature has failed. It is either reading open circuit, short circuit, or providing values outside the acceptable range. The unit cannot safely control the burner modulation rate without an accurate outlet temperature reading, so it shuts down. On RTGH models, the outlet thermistor is accessible by removing the front cover panel. Disconnect the sensor, measure its resistance with a multimeter (resistance should decrease predictably as temperature increases), and replace if readings are erratic, open (infinite), or shorted (near zero). Use the OEM replacement sensor for proper calibration.
