MECH-TRANSMISSION
Craftsman · T210 46" Turn Tight
The mower engine runs but the mower does not move, moves very slowly, jerks, or loses drive power on hills. Craftsman riding mowers use hydrostatic (CVT on some T-series) transmissions that provide infinitely variable speed without shifting gears. The transmission is driven by a belt from the engine. Causes: (1) Drive belt worn, loose, or broken — the belt connecting the engine pulley to the transmission input pulley wears over time. A glazed, cracked, or stretched belt slips under load. Replace the drive belt. (2) Hydrostatic transmission bypass rod is pulled out — there is a bypass rod or lever that, when engaged, allows the mower to be pushed without starting the engine. If accidentally left in the bypass position, the transmission will not drive the wheels. Check the bypass near the rear axle area. (3) Low transmission fluid (on models with a serviceable transaxle) — some models have sealed transmissions, but others may have a fill/check plug. Refer to the owner manual. (4) Worn or damaged transmission — after many hours of use, internal oil breaks down and components wear. The transmission may whine, overheat, or lose power. Heavy hill work accelerates wear. Most hydrostatic transaxles on Craftsman mowers are sealed units that must be replaced as a complete assembly ($300-$600). (5) Transmission overheating — continuous operation on steep hills causes the hydraulic fluid to overheat, resulting in reduced performance. Let the transmission cool for 30 minutes.
