MECH-OVERHEATING
Craftsman · T210 46" Turn Tight
The engine runs hot, loses power, and may shut down. Craftsman riding mower engines (Briggs & Stratton or Kohler) are air-cooled and rely on airflow over cooling fins for heat dissipation. Overheating can cause permanent engine damage including warped cylinder head, blown head gasket, or seized piston. Causes: (1) Low engine oil — check the oil level with the dipstick on a level surface. Low oil means less lubrication and more friction heat. Add the recommended oil (typically SAE 10W-30) to the FULL mark. (2) Clogged cooling fins — grass clippings, dirt, and debris pack around the engine cylinder and cylinder head cooling fins, insulating them. Clean the fins with compressed air or a brush after every few uses. (3) Operating in extreme heat — mowing in 95°F+ temperatures with a heavy load causes additional heat stress. Take breaks to let the engine cool. (4) Engine running too fast or too slow — improper throttle setting. Most Craftsman mowers should be operated at full throttle for best cooling (the flywheel fan moves more air at higher RPM). (5) Wrong oil type or old/degraded oil — change oil every 50 hours or annually. (6) Engine loaded beyond capacity — cutting very tall, thick, or wet grass forces the engine to work harder.
