MECH-SAFETY-INTERLOCK
Craftsman · T210 46" Turn Tight
The engine will not start, shuts off when the operator leaves the seat, or cuts off when the mower is put in reverse. These are all intentional safety features, not malfunctions, but sometimes the interlock switches themselves malfunction and cause unwanted shutdowns. Craftsman riding mowers have multiple safety interlocks: (1) SEAT SWITCH — prevents starting and shuts off the engine if the operator is not seated. The switch is under the seat and activates from the operator weight. If the switch is faulty, it may intermittently cut the engine if you bounce in the seat going over rough terrain. Test by having someone press down on the seat while you try to start. Replacement seats include a new switch. (2) PTO/BLADE SWITCH — the engine will not start if the blade engagement lever or switch is in the ON position. This prevents accidental blade spinning during starting. (3) PARKING BRAKE — the engine will not start unless the parking brake is fully engaged on many models. (4) REVERSE CAUTION — Craftsman mowers have a Reverse Caution mode. By default, the blades shut off when you shift to reverse. To override this, the operator must activate Reverse Caution Mode (usually by turning the key to a specific position). The Reverse Caution indicator LED illuminates. (5) NEUTRAL/PARK — the transmission speed control must be in neutral or zero position. If any switch is intermittently faulty, the engine will shut off randomly. Switches cost $5-$20 and are easy to replace.
