MECH-BATTERY-CHARGING
Craftsman · T210 46" Turn Tight
The riding mower battery goes dead between uses, requires frequent jump-starting, or the engine cranks slowly. Craftsman riding mowers use a 12V lead-acid battery that is charged by an alternator driven by the engine flywheel. Causes: (1) Battery end of life — lead-acid batteries typically last 2-4 years. Internal sulfation reduces capacity over time. If the battery is more than 3 years old, replace it. (2) Corroded battery terminals — white or green corrosion on the battery posts prevents proper charging. Remove the cables, clean the terminals and clamps with a wire brush and baking soda solution, and reconnect tightly. (3) Loose battery connections — vibration can loosen cable clamps over time. Ensure both positive and negative cables are tight. (4) Failed alternator/stator — the charging system may not be producing voltage. With the engine running at full throttle, measure battery voltage — it should be 13.5-14.5V. If it reads below 13V, the charging system is faulty. (5) Excessive parasitic drain — a short circuit or accessory left on can discharge the battery. Disconnect the battery during long storage periods. (6) Incorrect battery — ensure the replacement battery matches the CCA and group size specified in the manual. (7) Not running the engine long enough — short mowing sessions may not provide enough charge time. Consider using a battery tender/maintainer during off-season.
