MECH-VIBRATION
Craftsman · Craftsman M110 140cc 21" Push Gas Lawn Mower
The push mower shakes excessively during operation, especially when the blade is engaged. Severe vibration is uncomfortable, causes premature wear, and can damage the engine crankshaft. Causes: (1) Bent blade — the #1 cause. Hitting a rock, root, stump, or sprinkler head bends the blade. Even a slight bend creates significant imbalance at high RPM. Remove and inspect the blade on a flat surface — any wobble means it is bent. Replace bent blades; do not try to straighten them. (2) Unbalanced blade — after sharpening, the blade must be balanced. Uneven grinding removes more metal from one side. Check balance by hanging the blade on a nail through the center hole — the heavy end drops down. Grind the heavy end until level. (3) Loose blade bolt — check the blade mounting bolt torque. It can loosen from vibration. Tighten to the specified torque (typically 38-50 ft-lbs). Use a torque wrench. (4) Bent crankshaft — if the mower hits a solid object hard enough, the engine crankshaft itself can bend. This is a terminal condition for most consumer mower engines (the repair cost exceeds the mower value). Diagnosis: remove the blade and start the engine — if the output shaft visibly wobbles, the crankshaft is bent. (5) Worn blade adapter — the adapter between the crankshaft and blade wears, causing wobble.
