MECH-SELF-PROPEL
Craftsman · Craftsman M110 140cc 21" Push Gas Lawn Mower
The mower has a self-propel feature but it does not engage, engages weakly, or the drive cuts in and out. Craftsman self-propelled mowers (like the M270) use a belt or gear-driven system to power the front or rear wheels. The drive is engaged by squeezing the drive bail handle. Causes: (1) Worn drive belt — the belt connecting the engine to the transmission wears and stretches over time. A loose belt slips and reduces drive power. Replace the drive belt. (2) Broken or stretched drive cable — the cable connecting the drive bail to the transmission engagement mechanism loses tension. Adjust the cable at the adjustment bracket, or replace if frayed/broken. (3) Worn drive wheels/gears — on rear-wheel-drive models, the drive wheels have internal gears that mesh with the transmission output. These plastic gears wear down, causing the wheels to slip. Replacement drive wheels cost $15-$25 each. (4) Drive engagement mechanism stuck — dirt, grass, and debris can jam the drive engagement mechanism. Clean and lubricate the linkage. (5) Transmission failure — the internal gears or friction disc in the transmission have worn out. On some models the transmission is replaceable as a unit. (6) Engine speed too low — the drive system needs the engine at full throttle to provide adequate drive power. Ensure the throttle is at the FAST/RABBIT setting.
