MECH-VIBRATION
Craftsman · Z560 54 in 24 HP V-Twin Zero-Turn Riding Mower
The riding mower vibrates abnormally, especially when the blades are engaged. Some vibration is normal due to the rotating engine and blades, but excessive vibration indicates a problem that can damage the mower and is uncomfortable for the operator. Causes: (1) Bent blade — the most common cause. Even a minor bend from hitting a rock, root, or sprinkler head causes significant imbalance. Remove and inspect each blade on a flat surface. If bent, replace — do not attempt to straighten. (2) Unbalanced blade — after sharpening, the blade must be balanced. An unbalanced blade creates a heavy side that vibrates the deck. Use a blade balancer (or a nail through the center hole) to check balance. Grind the heavy end until balanced. (3) Loose blade bolt — the blade mounting bolt can loosen from vibration. Check torque every 10 hours. Typical torque: 35-50 ft-lbs depending on model. (4) Failed blade spindle bearing — worn bearings in the spindle housing create wobble and vibration. With the engine off, grab each blade tip and try to rock it — any movement means the bearing is worn. Replace the spindle or bearing. (5) Engine mounting bolts loose — the engine mounts to the frame with bolts that include rubber isolators. Loose bolts or deteriorated isolators increase vibration. (6) Damaged flywheel key — a partially sheared flywheel key causes the engine to vibrate. Inspect the key; replace if damaged.
