MECH-IGNITOR
Carrier · Carrier 58STA/STX 80,000 BTU 80% AFUE Single-Stage Upflow Gas Furnace
The furnace inducer runs and the pressure switch closes, but the ignitor does not glow and the burners never light. The hot surface ignitor (HSI) is a ceramic element that heats to ~1,800°F to ignite the gas. Carrier furnaces use either silicon carbide (older, very fragile, dark gray) or silicon nitride (newer, more durable, white/light gray) ignitors. These fail from thermal cycling — they crack from repeatedly heating and cooling over thousands of cycles. To diagnose: with power off, visually inspect the ignitor for cracks (even hairline cracks are fatal). Test with a multimeter — a good ignitor reads 40-200 ohms; an open reading means it's cracked. Replacement is straightforward DIY: turn off power and gas, remove the 2 mounting screws, disconnect the wire plug, install the new ignitor (never touch the ceramic element with bare fingers — oil from skin creates hot spots that cause premature failure). Parts cost $15-$80 depending on the model.
