The upper tank temperature sensor has failed — open or short circuit detected. The heat pump control board cannot accurately monitor upper tank temperature. The heat pump mode may be disabled and the unit may fall back to electric-only operation. Disconnect power and check the sensor wire connections on the control board. Measure sensor resistance — should be approximately 10K ohms at room temperature. Replace the upper sensor if readings are abnormal.
