MECH-WONT-START-PROPANE
Champion · Champion 201508 9500W/7500W Dual Fuel Portable Generator with CO Shield and Electric Start
The generator starts and runs normally on gasoline but will not start when the fuel selector is set to propane/LPG. This is one of the most common dual fuel generator complaints. Causes: (1) Propane tank valve not open — the most overlooked cause. Ensure the propane tank service valve is fully open (turn counterclockwise until it stops). (2) Propane tank empty or very low — when LPG tanks are below 10% full, the remaining liquid propane may not vaporize adequately, especially in cold weather. Check tank gauge or weight. (3) Fuel selector not fully in LPG position — the fuel selector switch or knob must be firmly set to the propane position. Some models have a three-position switch (GAS/OFF/LPG) — ensure it is fully rotated to LPG. (4) Propane regulator issue — the demand regulator that controls propane flow to the engine may be stuck, have a damaged diaphragm, or have frozen moisture blocking the orifice (common in cold weather). Tap the regulator gently. If frozen, warm the regulator with warm water (NOT a flame). (5) Propane hose connection not sealed — check the quick-connect fitting on the propane hose for a tight, leak-free connection. Apply soapy water to connections to check for bubbles (leaks). (6) Starting procedure — on propane, the engine may need the choke and a few extra pulls to draw propane through the system on first start. Some models require starting on gasoline briefly, then switching to propane.
