CO-SHUTOFF
Champion · Champion 201508 9500W/7500W Dual Fuel Portable Generator with CO Shield and Electric Start
The CO Shield indicator LED flashes red and the engine automatically shuts down. Champion CO Shield technology uses an integrated carbon monoxide sensor that continuously monitors CO levels near the generator. When CO concentration reaches a dangerous level (typically 400-800 ppm depending on the model), the system immediately shuts down the engine and the red CO Shield LED begins flashing. This is a critical safety feature — carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that causes death. NEVER operate a generator indoors, in a garage (even with the door open), in a basement, crawl space, or any enclosed or partially enclosed space. Causes of CO Shield activation: (1) Generator placed too close to a building — exhaust is being trapped or blown back toward the generator sensor. Move the generator at least 20 feet from any building, with the exhaust pointing away from all doors, windows, and vents. (2) Operating in a partially enclosed area (carport, covered patio, breezeway). (3) Wind blowing exhaust back toward the generator. Reposition so wind carries exhaust away. (4) Faulty CO sensor — in rare cases, the sensor may trigger falsely due to age, moisture exposure, or contamination. If the generator triggers CO Shield outdoors in open air with wind carrying exhaust away, the sensor may need replacement. After CO Shield activation, wait 5 minutes for CO to dissipate, then restart in a well-ventilated location.
