OVERLOAD
Champion · Champion 100177 8.5 kW 439cc Home Standby Generator with 50A ATS
The Overload indicator light (red) illuminates and the generator may automatically reduce output or shut down. This means the total electrical load connected to the generator exceeds its rated running wattage. Champion generators have both a running (continuous) wattage and a peak (starting) wattage — motors and compressors draw 2-3x their running watts during startup. The circuit breakers on the generator panel may also trip. To resolve: (1) Immediately disconnect some loads to bring total wattage below the generator rated running watts. (2) Prioritize loads — connect the most critical items first, then add others one at a time. (3) Stagger motor startups — do not start multiple motor-driven appliances (refrigerator, AC, sump pump) simultaneously. Start one, let it stabilize for 30 seconds, then start the next. (4) Check individual loads with a wattage meter to understand actual draw. (5) If the overload light comes on with a light load, the voltage regulator may be failing (producing lower voltage forces higher current draw), or there may be a short circuit in a connected device or extension cord. Reset the circuit breaker by pushing the button in on the generator panel after reducing the load.
