MECH-WONT-START
Champion · Champion 100177 8.5 kW 439cc Home Standby Generator with 50A ATS
The engine does not start when the recoil starter is pulled or the electric start button is pressed. This is the most common Champion generator complaint and has multiple possible causes, checked in this order: (1) Fuel — ensure the fuel valve (petcock) is in the ON position, the fuel tank has fresh gasoline (gas older than 30 days without stabilizer degrades), and the fuel line is not kinked or blocked. For stored generators, old fuel is the #1 cause of no-start. Drain old fuel and refill with fresh gas. (2) Choke — set the choke to CLOSED (full choke) for cold starts. After the engine warms up (30-60 seconds), move to OPEN (RUN) position. (3) Spark plug — remove and inspect the spark plug. Clean or replace if fouled, worn, or cracked. Check spark plug gap (typically 0.028-0.031 inches). Test for spark by grounding the plug body against the engine block while pulling the starter — a blue spark should be visible. (4) Oil level — if oil is below the minimum level, the low oil sensor prevents starting. Add oil to the correct level. (5) Air filter — a severely clogged air filter prevents the engine from drawing enough air. Remove and inspect; replace if dirty. (6) Carburetor — stale fuel leaves varnish deposits that clog carburetor jets. Clean the carburetor or use carburetor cleaner spray through the air intake. For generators stored more than 30 days, always use fuel stabilizer (like Sta-Bil) in the tank.
