MECH-FILTER
Carrier · Carrier 58SB0 Comfort 80 Single-Stage 80% AFUE Gas Furnace
The furnace runs for a few minutes, then shuts off (high-limit trips — 4 blinks on LED), waits, then cycles back on. This repeating on/off cycle is most often caused by a dirty air filter restricting airflow through the furnace. With restricted airflow, the heat exchanger overheats and the high-limit safety switch opens. Carrier recommends checking filters monthly and replacing at least every 90 days. For homes with pets, heavy cooking, or construction nearby, replace every 30 days. A completely clogged filter can also cause the blower motor to overheat and fail prematurely. To fix: locate the filter (typically in the blower compartment, base of the return duct, or in a wall/ceiling return grille). Slide out the old filter, note the size printed on the frame, and install a new one with the airflow arrow pointing toward the furnace/blower. Standard 1" filters cost $3-$15; 4" media filters cost $20-$40.
