Those blinking lights on your furnace or AC aren't random. Here's the no-jargon guide to understanding what your HVAC system is trying to tell you.

Your furnace has a little window on the front. Behind it, there's a light blinking. Maybe it's blinking twice. Maybe five times. Maybe it's doing a long-short-long pattern like morse code.
That light is literally your furnace trying to talk to you. And once you learn its language, troubleshooting gets a lot less scary.
How Furnace Error Codes Work
Here's the beautifully simple system: the LED blinks a certain number of times, pauses, then repeats. Count the blinks during one cycle — that's your error code.
- Steady on (no blinking) — Normal operation. Everything's fine.
- 1 blink — System lockout. Usually means it tried to start and failed too many times.
- 2 blinks — Pressure switch problem. The furnace can't confirm proper venting.
- 3 blinks — Pressure switch stuck closed. Similar to above but the opposite issue.
- 4 blinks — Open high-limit switch. The furnace got too hot and shut down to protect itself.
- 5 blinks — Flame sensed but no call for heat. Something is misfiring.
What These Mean in Human Language
1 Blink — "I gave up"
Your furnace tried to ignite multiple times and couldn't. It's locked itself out to prevent unsafe conditions. Fix: Turn the thermostat off for 30 seconds, then back on. This resets the lockout. If it locks out again, the igniter or gas valve may need attention.
2 Blinks — "I can't breathe"
The pressure switch confirms that exhaust gases are being properly vented. If the furnace can't confirm that, it won't fire. Think of it like: your furnace is holding its breath waiting for confirmation that the chimney is clear. Fix: Check the exhaust vent outside for blockages (ice, bird nests, wasp nests). Also check the condensate drain — if it's clogged, water backs up and triggers this code. (Goodman 2-flash diagnosis · Rheem 2-flash diagnosis · Lennox 2-flash diagnosis)
4 Blinks — "I'm overheating!"
The furnace temperature exceeded safe limits. Think of it like: a car engine overheating because the radiator is blocked. Fix: Replace your air filter (seriously — a clogged filter is the cause 70% of the time). Also check that your vents and returns aren't blocked by furniture or rugs. (Goodman 4-flash diagnosis · Rheem 4-flash diagnosis · Lennox 4-flash diagnosis)
Air Conditioner Error Codes
Central AC units are a bit different — many use digital displays on the thermostat or on the unit itself. Common ones:
- E1 / EC — Communication error between indoor and outdoor units. Check wiring connections. (Carrier E4 diagnosis · Trane E3 diagnosis)
- E5 / OC — Overcurrent protection. Usually means the compressor is struggling. Check for dirty condenser coils (outside unit). (Goodman E1 diagnosis)
- F1 — Indoor temperature sensor fault. Bad thermistor.
- P1 — High/low pressure protection. Could be low refrigerant (needs a pro).
The One Rule That Solves 50% of HVAC Problems
Ready? Change your air filter. That's it. A clogged filter restricts airflow, which causes overheating, which causes shutdowns, which causes error codes. If you haven't changed your filter in the last 3 months, do that before anything else.
