The freezer defrost temperature sensor has failed or is reading out of range. This sensor monitors the evaporator coil temperature during defrost cycles to determine when defrost is complete. A failed sensor can cause the defrost heater to run too long (melting ice onto food) or not long enough (ice buildup on coils). The sensor is located on or near the evaporator coils behind the rear panel in the freezer.
