FAN MOTOR FAIL
Rheem · Rheem Classic Series RA16 3-Ton 16 SEER Central Air Conditioner
The condenser fan motor has failed or is failing. The fan sits atop the outdoor unit and pulls air through the condenser coil to reject heat. When the fan fails, the condenser cannot dissipate heat and the compressor will overheat and trip on internal overload within minutes. Symptoms: fan blade doesn't spin but compressor runs (very hot air radiating from the top of the unit), fan runs intermittently, fan spins slowly, or the motor makes grinding, squealing, or humming noises. Fan motors fail from bearing wear after years of outdoor exposure (rain, snow, UV, temperature extremes). Replace the condenser fan motor. On Rheem units with a dual-run capacitor, the fan motor and compressor share one capacitor — if the fan motor side of the capacitor has failed, replacing just the capacitor may restore fan operation. Always check/replace the capacitor when diagnosing fan motor issues.
