SHAFT SEAL LEAK
Pentair · Pentair IntelliFlo VSF Variable Speed Pool Pump
Water is dripping or streaming from the area between the motor and the pump wet end (volute housing). The mechanical shaft seal, which prevents water from traveling along the motor shaft into the motor, has worn out or failed. This is the most common pump repair — shaft seals are wear items with a typical lifespan of 3-7 years depending on water chemistry and run time. Running the pump dry, even briefly, can destroy a shaft seal in minutes. Replace the shaft seal kit (approximately $15-30 for parts). The pump must be partially disassembled — remove the motor from the wet end, remove the old seal, and install the new seal set (a stationary seat in the seal plate and a rotating seal on the impeller).
