MECH-WONT-START-CLICK
Cub Cadet · Cub Cadet ZT1 50 Ultima Series 23 HP Kawasaki 50" Zero-Turn Mower
Turning the key to START produces a clicking sound from the starter solenoid but the engine does not turn over. This indicates electrical power is reaching the solenoid but is insufficient to spin the starter motor. Causes: (1) WEAK/DEAD BATTERY — the most common cause. Test battery voltage (should be 12.4V+ at rest). If below 12V, charge fully with a battery charger or jump-start. If the battery is more than 3 years old, replace it (12V, 230 CCA for XT1/XT2 models). (2) CORRODED BATTERY TERMINALS — white or green corrosion on the posts creates resistance. Remove cables, clean terminals and clamps with a wire brush and baking soda solution, and reconnect tightly. Apply terminal protector spray. (3) LOOSE BATTERY CONNECTIONS — vibration loosens cable clamps. Tighten both positive and negative connections. (4) BAD STARTER SOLENOID — the solenoid clicks but does not pass current to the starter motor. Test by bridging the solenoid terminals briefly (WARNING: engine may start immediately — ensure brake is engaged and PTO is off). Replace if faulty. (5) BAD STARTER MOTOR — worn brushes or a dead spot in the armature. The motor is failing internally. Replace the starter. (6) GROUND CABLE ISSUE — the ground strap from battery to frame/engine must be clean and tight.
