MECH-SCALPING
Cub Cadet · Cub Cadet ZT1 50 Ultima Series 23 HP Kawasaki 50" Zero-Turn Mower
The mower deck cuts too low in spots, removing grass down to soil, especially on bumps and undulations. Zero-turn mowers with wide decks (42-54") are more prone to scalping than smaller mowers. Causes: (1) ANTI-SCALP WHEELS — Cub Cadet zero-turn decks have anti-scalp wheels that ride on the ground and prevent the deck from dipping. If they are worn, set too high, or missing, the deck scalps. Adjust anti-scalp wheels so they are about 1/4" above a flat surface at the desired cutting height. Replace worn wheels. (2) CUTTING HEIGHT TOO LOW — raise the deck one or two positions. (3) SPEED TOO FAST — driving over bumps at high speed causes the deck to bounce and scalp. Slow down on rough terrain. (4) DECK NOT LEVEL — an improperly leveled deck will scalp on one side. (5) LOW TIRE PRESSURE — uneven tire pressure tilts the deck.
