MECH-TRANSMISSION
Cub Cadet · Cub Cadet CC30H 30" 10.5 HP Briggs & Stratton Compact Riding Mower
The engine runs but the mower does not move, moves very slowly, jerks, or loses drive power on hills. Cub Cadet XT1 uses a Tuff Torq TL-200 hydrostatic transmission; XT2 uses a higher-capacity unit. Causes: (1) DRIVE BELT WORN/BROKEN — the belt from the engine to the transmission input wears over time. Replace. (2) BYPASS VALVE OPEN — the transmission bypass rod/lever (used for pushing the mower when the engine is off) may be left in bypass position. Check near the rear axle and push the rod IN to the normal position. (3) LOW/DEGRADED TRANSMISSION FLUID — on models with serviceable transaxles, check fluid level. If the fluid is dark or burned smelling, it is degraded. (4) TRANSMISSION PURGING — after any service, the hydrostatic system must be purged of air. Follow the purging procedure: raise the rear wheels, run the engine, and cycle the speed control forward/reverse 5 times each. (5) HYDROSTATIC FAILURE — after many hours of heavy use (especially on hills), the internal pump and motor wear. The transmission whines, overheats, or loses power. Sealed transaxles must be replaced as a unit ($300-$600). (6) SPEED CONTROL LINKAGE — the pedal or lever linkage may be loose or disconnected.
