MECH-SURGING
Champion · Champion 9375/7500W Dual Fuel Portable Generator with CO Shield and Electric Start
The engine speed rhythmically increases and decreases (hunting/surging), causing lights to brighten and dim and motor-driven loads to speed up and slow down. This is one of the most common generator complaints. Causes (in order of likelihood): (1) Clogged or dirty carburetor — the most common cause. Varnish deposits from old fuel partially block the idle circuit or main jet, causing inconsistent fuel delivery. The engine alternates between too-lean (speed drops) and too-rich (speed rises) as fuel intermittently flows through the partial blockage. Clean the carburetor thoroughly, paying special attention to the pilot jet and idle circuit passages. (2) Fuel supply restriction — a partially blocked fuel filter, kinked fuel line, or clogged fuel tank vent cap. The fuel flow can keep up at some RPMs but not others, causing surging. Clean or replace the fuel filter, check the fuel line path, and ensure the gas cap vent is clear. (3) Governor adjustment — the governor spring tension or linkage may need adjustment. If the governor is hunting for the correct throttle position, the engine surges. Refer to the owner manual for governor adjustment procedure. (4) Air leak — a cracked carburetor gasket, loose carburetor mounting bolts, or a torn intake manifold gasket allows unmetered air to enter, leaning the mixture intermittently. Check all intake connections for tightness.
