MECH-OIL-LEAK
Champion · Champion 3400W Dual Fuel Inverter Generator with CO Shield and Electric Start
Engine oil is visible on or under the generator. While less immediately dangerous than a fuel leak, oil leaks should be repaired promptly to prevent engine damage from low oil level and to avoid slipping hazards or environmental contamination. Common leak locations: (1) Oil drain plug — the most common leak point. The drain plug may be loose, or the crush washer/O-ring is damaged. Tighten to the specified torque (typically 15-18 ft-lbs) and replace the washer if needed. (2) Valve cover gasket — oil seeps from around the valve cover. This is common on engines that have been overheated or have many hours. Replace the valve cover gasket. (3) Crankcase gasket/sealant — oil leaks from the mating surface of the crankcase halves. This requires more involved repair — the engine must be partially disassembled to reseal the crankcase. (4) Oil fill cap/dipstick O-ring — a deteriorated O-ring on the oil fill cap or dipstick allows oil to weep out during vibration. Replace the O-ring. (5) Crankshaft front or rear oil seal — worn seals allow oil to leak along the crankshaft. Seal replacement requires removing the flywheel or output end components. (6) Overfilled oil — if the oil level is above the FULL mark, excess oil can blow out through the breather tube. Drain oil to the correct level.
