MECH-NO-OUTPUT
Champion · Champion 200987 4500W Portable Inverter Generator with Electric Start
The engine starts and runs normally at proper speed, but no voltage is present at any of the generator outlets. For inverter generators, the Output indicator may be off. Causes: (1) Circuit breakers tripped — check all circuit breakers on the generator control panel. Push the reset button on each breaker. If a breaker immediately re-trips, there may be a short circuit in a connected device or extension cord. (2) Loss of residual magnetism in the alternator — the generator rotor needs a small amount of residual magnetism to begin producing voltage. Extended storage, vibration during transport, or running the generator with no load for long periods can demagnetize the rotor. To re-flash: connect an electric drill to the generator outlet, plug the drill in, start the generator, then spin the drill chuck BY HAND in the reverse direction while squeezing the trigger. This can re-establish the magnetic field. Alternatively, briefly connect a 12V battery to the AVR (automatic voltage regulator) output leads per the service manual procedure. (3) AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) failure — the AVR controls the field current to the rotor. If it fails, no voltage is produced. Test by bypassing the AVR per the service manual. AVR replacement costs $30-$100. (4) Broken wire or loose connection inside the generator housing — vibration can loosen wire connectors. (5) Damaged stator or rotor windings — less common but possible after a severe overload or electrical fault.
