MECH-VIBRATION
Champion · Champion 100179 12.5 kW Home Standby Generator with 200A SE-Rated ATS
The generator vibrates excessively during operation, more than normal. All generators produce some vibration due to the single-cylinder engine, but abnormal vibration indicates a problem. Causes: (1) Loose mounting bolts or feet — check all engine-to-frame mounting bolts and tighten. Inspect rubber vibration isolation mounts (feet) for deterioration, cracking, or missing pieces. Replace worn mounts. (2) Uneven surface — the generator must be placed on a flat, level, firm surface. Soft ground or uneven pavement causes the generator to rock. (3) Damaged or unbalanced flywheel — if the generator was dropped or impacted, the flywheel key may be sheared (partially or fully), throwing off ignition timing and balance. A sheared flywheel key can also prevent starting. (4) Bent crankshaft — from dropping the generator or striking an object. This causes severe vibration and is typically not economical to repair. (5) Loose or damaged alternator components — the rotor or stator may have shifted or a mounting has broken. (6) Engine misfiring — intermittent combustion causes uneven power pulses that feel like vibration. See MECH-ROUGH-RUNNING for misfire diagnosis. (7) Worn engine bearings — rod or main bearings that are worn allow movement in the rotating assembly, causing increasing vibration as wear progresses.
