MECH-FUEL-LEAK
Champion · Champion 100179 12.5 kW Home Standby Generator with 200A SE-Rated ATS
Gasoline or fuel is visibly leaking from the generator. This is a SERIOUS FIRE HAZARD — stop the generator immediately, move it away from any ignition sources, and do not restart until the leak is repaired. Common leak locations: (1) Carburetor overflow — a stuck float needle valve allows the fuel bowl to overflow. Tap the side of the carburetor bowl gently to free a stuck float. If this does not work, the carburetor needs disassembly to clean or replace the float needle and seat. (2) Fuel line connections — the rubber fuel lines connecting the tank to the fuel valve and carburetor deteriorate over time (cracking, hardening). Inspect all fuel lines and clamps. Replace any cracked or hardened fuel lines. (3) Fuel valve (petcock) — the shutoff valve may have a worn seal or loose connection. Replace the fuel valve if it drips when in the OFF position. (4) Fuel tank — cracks or corrosion in the fuel tank, especially around the seam or petcock mounting. Plastic tanks can crack from UV exposure or impact. (5) Fuel cap gasket — a damaged cap gasket allows fuel to seep out during operation, especially when the tank is full and the generator vibrates. Replace the fuel cap. (6) Carburetor gaskets — worn gaskets between the carburetor and intake manifold or between carburetor body sections. NEVER operate a generator with a fuel leak — gasoline vapor is extremely flammable and explosive.
