MECH-REVERSING-VALVE
Carrier · Carrier 25VNA Infinity Greenspeed Variable-Speed Heat Pump
The reversing valve (also called a 4-way valve) directs refrigerant flow either for cooling or heating. When it gets stuck, the heat pump provides the wrong mode of operation — cold air when heating is called for, or warm air when cooling is called for. The reversing valve is controlled by a solenoid coil that slides an internal piston. Causes of sticking: (1) Failed solenoid coil — check for 24V at the solenoid with a multimeter when the thermostat calls for a mode change. If voltage is present but the valve doesn't switch, the solenoid may be bad. (2) Internal valve piston stuck — corrosion, debris, or a mechanical failure inside the valve prevents the piston from moving. A technician sometimes "unsticks" the valve by rapidly cycling the solenoid or gently tapping the valve body. (3) Pressure differential too high — if system pressures are abnormally high, the valve piston may not have enough force to overcome the pressure difference. Reversing valve replacement is expensive ($400-$1,200 installed) because it requires brazing, evacuation, and recharging.
