MECH-SHEAR-PIN
Briggs & Stratton · Briggs & Stratton 1227MD Dual-Stage Snow Blower with Electric Start
Shear pins (or shear bolts) are safety devices that connect the auger to the auger shaft. They are designed to break (shear) when the auger strikes a hard object like a rock, edge of concrete, or frozen newspaper. If the auger stops turning but the engine runs normally, the shear pins have likely broken. Shut off the engine and inspect both shear pins on the auger shaft. Replace with the correct B&S replacement shear pins — never substitute with standard bolts, which will transfer impact force to the gearbox and cause expensive damage. Keep spare shear pins on hand during snow season.
