LG dryers are pretty smart about telling you when something's wrong. The D80 code means your exhaust vent is approximately 80% blocked. There's also D90 (90%) and D95 (95% — basically sealed shut).
This isn't just annoying. Clogged dryer vents are the #1 cause of dryer fires. 2,900 home fires per year in the US are caused by dryer vents, according to the NFPA. So yeah, fix this one promptly.
Before You Start
You'll need:
- A dryer vent brush kit ($15-20, available anywhere). Get a flexible rod set, not just a single brush.
- A vacuum with a hose attachment.
- A screwdriver (for the vent clamp).
- 20-30 minutes.
Step 1: Disconnect the Dryer
Unplug the dryer (or turn off the gas valve for gas models). Pull it away from the wall enough to access the vent connection. Loosen the clamp on the vent hose and slide it off the dryer's exhaust port.
Step 2: Clean From the Inside
Feed the vent brush into the duct that goes into the wall. Push and pull it through, adding rod sections as needed. You'll feel resistance where lint has built up — keep pushing gently. Don't force it around tight bends.
Pull the brush out periodically and clean off the lint. You might be shocked at how much comes out. First-timers regularly pull out a small animal's worth of lint.
Step 3: Clean From the Outside
Go outside and find where the vent exits your house. Remove the vent cover and brush from the outside in. Use the vacuum to suck out loosened lint.
While you're there, make sure the vent flap opens freely. Some get stuck shut from paint, wasp nests, or packed lint.
Step 4: Reassemble and Test
Reconnect the vent hose, making sure the clamp is tight. Push the dryer back into position (don't crush the vent hose). Run a short cycle and verify:
- The D80 code is gone.
- You feel strong airflow at the outside vent exit.
- The dryer actually heats properly now — clothes should feel hot after 10 minutes.
Pro Tip: The Tissue Test
Hold a tissue against the outside vent while the dryer runs. It should blow away from the house. If it sticks to the opening or barely flutters, you still have a blockage deeper in the duct.
Going Forward
Clean your dryer vent at least once a year. If your vent run is longer than 15 feet or has multiple elbows, do it every 6 months. Set a calendar reminder. Future you will thank present you.
