You open the dishwasher expecting clean dishes and find... a puddle. The dishes are sitting in murky water and nothing drained.
Good news: this is almost never a dead pump. Let's start with the easy stuff.
Fix #1: Check the Garbage Disposal Knockout
If you recently installed a garbage disposal, there's a plastic knockout plug inside the dishwasher drain port. If nobody punched it out, your dishwasher has literally nowhere to drain.
Look at the disposal inlet where the dishwasher drain hose connects. If you can't see through it, grab a screwdriver and knock that plug out from the inside. Then fish it out of the disposal before running it.
This one trips up even experienced plumbers. Don't feel bad.
Fix #2: The Drain Loop / Air Gap
Follow the drain hose from the dishwasher to the sink or disposal. It should loop up high — close to the bottom of the countertop — before going down to the drain connection. This "high loop" prevents backflow.
If the hose is just running straight along the floor, dirty water from the sink can flow backward into the dishwasher. Zip-tie the hose up high under the counter.
Fix #3: Clean the Filter and Sump
GE dishwashers have a filter system at the bottom of the tub:
- Remove the bottom rack.
- Twist and lift out the filter assembly (usually turns counter-clockwise).
- Clean it under running water. You'll probably find food debris, grease, maybe a piece of glass or a sticker from a jar.
- While it's out, check the sump area below — scoop out any debris with a paper towel.
This takes 5 minutes, costs nothing, and is the fix about 60% of the time.
Fix #4: Check the Drain Hose for Kinks
Pull the dishwasher out slightly (carefully — don't yank the water line) and visually inspect the drain hose along its full length. A single kink acts like a closed valve. Straighten any bends and make sure nothing is pinching the hose.
When It's Actually the Drain Pump
If you've cleared the filter and hose and water still won't drain, listen during the drain cycle. You should hear the pump motor humming. If you hear nothing — or a grinding/clicking sound — the drain pump motor may need replacement. They run $30-60 for the part and are accessible from the bottom of the unit.
